The Shaw Gibbs Group has several offices in Central and Southern England and have ambitious plans to expand our business. To support our growth plans, we have an opportunity for a Trainee Tax Associate to join our London tax team. This is a full-time role.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A degree at a 2.1 or above in any discipline or a minimum of 120 UCAS points; or a professional qualification in the accountancy sector e.g. ACCA
  • GCSE Math’s, grade 6 (B) or above (or equivalent) and GCSE English Language 4/5 (C) or above (or equivalent)
  • IT literate – Microsoft Office. Ability to use computerised accounting software

Skills and Personal Qualities:

  • Ideally be able to drive, with own vehicle, or learning to drive
  • Professional attitude – identifies and acts upon client needs and is able to deliver excellent client services.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • The ability to work as part of a team and to form good relationships with staff and clients
  • Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accurate work
  • Plans and organises tasks/priorities and effectively meets deadlines
  • Demonstrates good self motivation and uses initiative appropriately to resolve problems
  • Self motivated
  • Keen to learn and develop – demonstrates understanding of own profession and keeps abreast of relevant      developments.
  • The ability to work flexibly, with willingness to travel to client sites and the Firm’s other office in London.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Developing and applying your technical knowledge through on-the-job training and formal qualifications
  • Assist with basic tax compliance matters for a variety of personal and corporate tax clients, including preparation of tax returns and tax provisions for accounts purposes
  • Dealing with HMRC on enquires and information requests
  • Support the tax managers on ad hoc tax advisory work, which may involve a wide range of personal and corporate tax planning.
  • Assist with preparation of VAT returns on an ad hoc basis
  • Assist with the accounts preparation of sole traders, partnerships, and limited companies in a junior capacity on an ad hoc basis when required.
  • Work at  client premises when required, gaining awareness of business activities and operations.
  • Build effective working relationships with Partners and staff to provide a personal, professional service for the benefit of both clients and the firm.
