Employers will be required to contribute from August.
The government has announced (Tuesday 12 Mary 2020) that the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme will remain in place until the end of October. Therefore, furloughed workers will continue to receive 80% of their current salary, up to £2,500. This extension is to prevent large scale redundancies over the summer and in line with the government plans to encourage a phased and measured reopening of the economy.
From the start of August, furloughed workers will be able to return to work part-time with employers being asked to pay a percentage towards the salaries of their furloughed staff. The employer contribution is yet to be announced along with what part-time means.
The employer contribution together with the government contribution will ensure staff continue to receive 80% of their salary. The specific details of the extension and implementation will be announced by the end of this month.
