We recently had the pleasure of hosting an Accountancy Open Evening for 3rd year graduates from our great local university - Surrey.
We welcomed students from a wide variety of degree disciplines who had the opportunity to join members of Alliotts audit and accounts team and HR team in our Guildford office and discuss all things accountancy.
The initiative was set up by Rebecca Trudgett, senior audit and accounts manager in our Guildford office, who wanted to make sure students from the University of Surrey are aware of the opportunities that Alliotts had to offer. Rebecca introduced Alliotts, the way that we work and all of the advantages of working for a medium sized practice. She was joined by Alex Reddock who is one year into his ACCA studies, Alex talked about how the people at Alliotts supported him and his experiences of going through the SWAT programme, from the recruitment and selection process through to the training programme.
It was kept relaxed and informal with students getting to know the rest of the Alliotts team, finding out about their career paths and what life is really like in a mid-tier accountancy practice. One of the main challenges as a trainee is combining work and study and our trainees were able to talk about their experiences and how the right support was crucial to their success. Other things that surprised our guests was the variety of assignments that our people get involved in from day one, and our mentoring programme which trainees said was particularly valuable in helping them through their studies.
Students were also able to meet Amiee Winney from SWAT UK
and discuss the application process and both the technical and practical aspects of the training that SWAT UK provides.
We appreciated the tricky questions the students had for us and were really impressed by the level of knowledge/research each student had done beforehand about accountancy as a career and Alliotts as a firm.
As a result of the open evening we have been able to arrange short term work experience places for a number of the attendees. We are keen to continue to support the University of Surrey and its students.
